<description>One interesting thing I read the other day (can't recall if it was in a National Geographic or in the NY Times) is that, since the 1920s, at least, beliefs in Creationism and Evolution have changed little, as a percentage of the US population. Here is the &lt;a href="http://www.nwcreation.net/atheism.html"&gt;results from the Gallop poll&lt;/a&gt; since 1981 (I apologize for the source; it is the first match I could find with Google). The data prior to that was gathered from a more generalized question of evolution vs. creationism, but still showed roughly 45% of America believes in literal Creationism, while 10-15% believe in pure Evolution.

The numbers haven't changed so much over time. As far as I can tell, what has changed is the power base of America. As the middle and upper classes have grown over time, so has their power and influence. I would argue, with little supporting evidence, that in the past the power base had a higher concentration of scientifically minded people. As the country has become more egalitarian, the belief in Creationism within the power base has similarly grown.

In either case, I find myself agreeing more and more with Ralph Nader with his comment that the political climate within the US must necessarily get worse before it can be improved. I think the current resurgence of religion within the US government will not last. My hope is that this will result in a renewed interest in science and technology.
