NARA: Legislative Treasures

My buddy Richard works at the National Archives and had a chance to give House Speaker Dennis Hastert a tour of the new Legislative Treasures Vault. How cool is that? From the National Archives Website, “House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) joined Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein today to open the new National Archives Legislative Treasures Vault. The Legislative Treasures Vault holds records identified by the National Archives, with the input of the Clerk of the House and Secretary of the Senate, as the most significant historical documents of Congress.” (more)

Dinosaurs to Church

“A new poll shows that 66% of Americans think President Bush is doing a poor job of handling the war in Iraq… and the remaining 34% think Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs to church.” -SNL

Darwin Does D.C.

From Scientific American, “According to a 2005 Pew Research Center poll, 70 percent of evangelical Christians believe that living beings have always existed in their present form, compared with 32 percent of Protestants and 31 percent of Catholics. Politically, 60 percent of Republicans are creationists, whereas only 11 percent accept evolution, compared with 29 percent of Democrats who are creationists and 44 percent who accept evolution. A 2005 Harris Poll found that 63 percent of liberals but only 37 percent of conservatives believe that humans and apes have a common ancestry. What these figures confirm for us is that there are religious and political reasons for rejecting evolution. Can one be a conservative Christian and a Darwinian? Yes. Here’s how.”

More Die From Suicide

From PsycPORT, “More people kill themselves each year, than the numbers who die from wars and murders combined, but most of these suicides can be prevented, Swiss Radio International reported on Sunday, the day marking the third World Suicide Prevention Day. About 20 million to 60 million people try to kill themselves each year, but only around 1 million of them succeed, said Dr. Jose Manoel Bertolote, a mental health official at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Both Sides Now

Rows and floes of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feather canyons everywhere. I’ve looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun. They rain and snow on everyone. So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way. I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now, from up and down, and still somehow it’s cloud illusions I recall. I really don’t know clouds at all.

Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel as every fairy tale comes real. I’ve looked at love that way. But now its just another show. You leave em laughing when you go. And if you care, don’t let them know. Don’t give yourself away. I’ve looked at love from both sides now. From give and take, and still somehow it’s loves illusions I recall. I really don’t know love at all. Read more

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Monkey see, monkey do. Baby humans and apes both bond with their parents by mimicking facial expressions. Now researchers report in the September issue of PLOS Biology that infant monkeys also get in on the act: for up to 7 days after birth, rhesus macaques will imitate humans smacking their lips, opening their mouths, and sticking out their tongues. The findings indicate that emulation by newborn primates evolved earlier than previously thought. (Photo: Ferrari et al., PLoS Biology)

Telephone Telepathy?

Many people have experienced the phenomenon of receiving a telephone call from someone shortly after thinking about them — now a scientist says he…

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition

How completely adrift are we as a country that we demand to watch movies and TV shows about a war that isn’t even complete? It’s only been 5 years! People are still dying all over the world because of religious wackos and American foreign policy. In the well insulated United States we are making movies about it all. As if the reality of the news just isn’t enough to satisfy our appetite for destruction and death. We are a nation of NASCAR fans just waiting for the next fatal car crash so that we can wave the American flag, put more magnets on our cars, and pray for the dead. Read more

The Artificial Prison of the Human Mind

From Damn Interesting, “In 1971, a study about prisons was funded by the U.S. Navy to try to better understand problems in the Marine Corps.’ prisons. The study was run by a group of researchers at Stanford, led by psychologist Philip G. Zimbardo. The idea was to create a controlled environment in the Stanford halls to simulate a prison. There would be participants recruited to play both the prisoners and the guards, and the experiment would last for two weeks.”
