Morphic Resonance and the Nature of Memory

Rupert Sheldrake proposes that nature is governed not by fixed laws, but by evolving habits. According to hypothesis of formative causation, all self-organizing systems, including crystals, organisms, and societies contain an inherit memory, given by a process called morphic resonance from previous similar systems. All human beings draw upon a collective human memory, and in turn contribute to it. Even individual memory depends on morphic resonance rather than on physical memory traces stored within the brain. Random Molecular Permutations

How much predictive power does our DNA have? Let’s say that you and I have never met. If I had your complete genome mapped out would I be able to make any serious predictions about you? Hair color? Height? Weight? Personality? Career path? Many scientists believe that DNA can give us a really good idea of the type of person you are. There are a few scientists that disagree – Rupert Sheldrake is one of them. The latest issue of New Scientist magazine details the bet made between Rupert and Lewis Wolpert on this topic. At stake is a “fine case of port”.

Lewis Wolpert’s faith in the predictive power of the genome is misplaced. Genes enable organisms to make proteins, but do not contain programs or blueprints, or explain the development of embryos.

The problems begin with proteins. Genes code for the linear sequences of amino acids in proteins, which then fold up into complex three-dimensional forms. Wolpert’s wager presupposes that the folding of proteins can be computed from first principles, given the sequence of amino acids specified by the genes. So far, this has proved impossible. As in all bottom-up calculations, there is a combinatorial explosion. For example, by random folding, the amino-acid chain of the enzyme ribonuclease, a small protein, could adopt more than 1040 different shapes, which would take billions of years to explore. In fact, it folds into its habitual form in 2 minutes.

Even if we could solve protein-folding, the next stage would be to predict the structure of cells on the basis of the interactions of millions of proteins and other molecules. This would unleash a far worse combinatorial explosion, with more possible arrangements than all the atoms in the universe.

Random molecular permutations simply cannot explain how organisms work. Instead, cells, tissues and organs develop in a modular manner, shaped by morphogenetic fields, first recognised by developmental biologists in the 1920s. Wolpert himself acknowledges the importance of such fields. Among biologists, he is best known for “positional information”, by which cells “know” where they are within the field of a developing organ, such as a limb. But he believes morphogenetic fields can be reduced to standard chemistry and physics. I disagree. I believe these fields have organising abilities, or systems properties, that involve new scientific principles.

The Human Genome Project has itself set back the hopes it engendered. First, our genome contains only between 20,000 and 25,000 genes, far fewer than the 100,000 expected. In contrast, sea urchins have about 26,000, and rice plants 38,000. Moreover, our genome differs very little from the chimpanzee’s genome, the sequencing of which was completed in 2005. As Svante Pääbo, director of the Chimpanzee Genome Project, commented: “We cannot see in this why we are so different from chimpanzees.”

Second, in practice, the predictive value of human genomes turns out to be low. Everyone knows tall parents tend to have tall children, and recent studies on the genomes of 30,000 people identified about 50 genes associated with being tall or short. Yet together these genes accounted for only about 5 per cent of the inheritance of height. This is not the only example of “missing heritability”. Steve Jones, professor of genetics at University College London says that “hubris has been replaced with concern”, and he suggests the present approach is “throwing good money after bad”.

Wolpert is not alone in believing in the predictive value of the genome. Governments, venture capitalists and medical charities have bet and are still betting billions of dollars on it. More than a case of fine port is at stake.

Experiment Effects in Scientific Research: How Widely Are They Neglected? by R Sheldrake
Abstract: A survey of recent papers published in a range of scientific journals showed that the use of blind methodologies is very rare in the so-called hard sciences. In the physical sciences, no blind experiments were found among the 237 papers reviewed. In the biological sciences, there were 7 blind experiments out of 914 (0.8%). There was a higher proportion in the medical sciences, 6 out of 102 (5.9%), and in psychology and animal behavior, 7 out of 143 (4.9%). By far the highest proportion (85.2%) was in parapsychology.

A Dog That Seems to Know When His Owner Is Coming Home by R. Sheldrake / P. Smart
Abstract: Many dog owners claim that their animals know when a member of the household is about to come home, showing their anticipation by waiting at a door or window. We have investigated such a dog, called Jaytee, in more than 100 videotaped experiments. His owner, Pam Smart (P.S.) traveled at least 7 km away from home while the place where the dog usually waited for her was filmed continuously.

Abstract: Aimée Morgana noticed that her language-using African Grey parrot, N’kisi, often seemed to respond to her thoughts and intentions in a seemingly telepathic manner. We set up a series of trials to test whether this apparent telepathic ability would be expressed in formal tests in which Aimée and the parrot were in different rooms, on different floors, under conditions in which the parrot could receive no sensory information from Aimée or from anyone else. During these trials, Aimée and the parrot were both videotaped continuously.

An Automated Online Telepathy Test by R. Sheldrake / M. Lambert
Abstract: This paper describes an automated online telepathy test in which each receiver had four senders. In a series of 10 trials the computer picked one of the senders at random and asked her to write a short message to the receiver. At the end of the one-minute trial period, the receiver was asked to guess which sender had written a message, and she received the message only after this guess had been recorded by the computer.

A Dog That Seems To Know When His Owner Is Coming Home by D. Radin
Abstract: Initial observations by Sheldrake and Smart from 1994 through 1997 suggested that a male terrier dog named Jaytee was able to anticipate when Smart was returning home. In a later series of 45 formal videotaped experiments, Jaytee’s anticipatory behavior proved to be significantly accurate. Although Jaytee’s performance was remarkably accurate on average, sometimes he failed to anticipate his owner’s return. Analysis of environmental variables on the days of the tests suggests that Jaytee’s behavior was significantly affected by changes in a complex assortment of geomagnetic and other environmental factors.

Rupert Sheldrake in the News

Rupert’s revised A New Science of Life is out in the U.K. His books usually stir up the popular and scientific press alike. This time is no exception. However, this book marks nearly 30 years since the publication of the first edition of what is considered one of the most controversial books of the 20th century. A New Science of Life is excellently written and you don’t need a degree in developmental biology to follow along. It is certainly a brain twister and will make you think about things a little bit differently after you’ve read it. It was the book that woke me up from my own ‘dogmatic slumber’. I hope it will do the same for you. I will post a full review in the next few days but in the meantime, here is the buzz from around the web…
